Petal Cake Cutting Guide

Photograph: Wilton
Petal Tiers:Cut similar to round tiers as diagram shows. Therefore, one would have to move in two inches from the tier's outer edge; cut a circle and then slice 1 in. pieces within the circle. Then move in another 2 in., cut another circle, slice 1 in. pieces and so on until the tier is completely cut. The center core of each tier and the small top tier can be cut into 3rds, 4ths, and 6ths, depending on size.

Round Cake Cutting Guide

Yesterday I posted a quote by Sherry Rothfield. The quote was about compromise, but it also insinuated that there is an art to cutting a cake. Therefore, I thought that I should take a step back and discuss the art of cake cutting to ensure there is enough cake for all of your guests.

For this post, I will rely on Wilton, an industry leader in cake decorating, quality bakeware and food crafting. The Wilton’s cake cutting guide shows how to cut popular shaped wedding tiers into pieces approximately 1 in. x 2 in. by two layers high (about 4 in.). Even if a larger serving size is desired, the order of cutting is still the same.

The first step in cutting is to remove the top tier, and then begin the cutting with the 2nd tier followed by the 3rd, 4th and so on.

Round Tiers: Move in two inches from the tier's outer edge; cut a circle and then slice 1 in. pieces within the circle. Now move in another 2 in., cut another circle, slice 1 in. pieces and so on until the tier is completely cut. The center core of each tier and the small top tier can be cut into 3rds, 4ths, and 6ths, depending on size.

Indian Bride and Groom Cake Topper

Photograph: Bridal People

Because the Caribbean population includes many people of Indian descent, it was imperative for me to include an Indian Bride and Groom cake topper.

This Modern Indian Bride Cake Topper exemplifies a lovely mix of the traditional and the contemporary. The Bride is wearing a white sari with henna and bindi details. This beautifully-crafted figurine can be paired with the matching groom or mixed and matched with other cake top figurines.

Cake Boxes

One of the things that guests at a Caribbean wedding expect is a slice of black cake in a cake box. Besides being a Caribbean wedding tradition, it is a great way to share your wedding cake and say thank you to family, friends and guests for sharing your special day. After the main course at a wedding reception or party, many guests are too full to enjoy a slice of cake but would be happy to take it home to enjoy later. Send your guests home with a slice of cake neatly wrapped in a cake box.

Many Caribbean brides usually order a separate sheet cake for the cake boxes. Marilyn usually provides it two to three days before the wedding with the following instructions: cut the cake, wrap it in wax paper, and then place it in the cake box.

This could be a wonderful time for your mom, aunts, maid-of-honor, and bridesmaids to get together and have a cake cutting party. However, I must warn you to feed them before you start cutting the cake, so that they are not eating the cake instead of cutting and boxing it. Trust us on this, we had one mother of bride calling franticly after a cake cutting party to say that she needs another cake because they ate more cake than they should, and they didn’t have enough for the cake boxes.
